51% of USA Clean Energy is Conservation and Energy Efficiency... greater than all the solar, wind, biomass, biofuel, and geothermal combined! HowDoUconserve?

Instead of turning-on more lights at home, pihlenfe uses an inexpensive LED lighted latern (to reduce some of my home lighting) powered during the day by a built-in solar array and anytime by a hand-cranker! This solar/cranking latern was easily purchased from LL Bean for only $30 US dollars.
ReplyDeleteI learned lately from your HowDoUconserve YouTube video and Blog all about running hot water heaters on vacation mode (low settings) when I am not home. I now only heat what I need! When my hot water heater fails (future), I also will replace with a "tankless" unit too. I am really saving here lately... you should see my gas bill. Thanks again!
ReplyDeletePihlenfe also added more inexpensive insulation (electrical power outlets [gaskets]) to my home from HomeDepot. I also capped-off/blocked-off my fireplace inside with some FREE cardboard insulation. My utility bills continue to reduce month after month, and also my Carbon Footprint is continuing to reduce too!
ReplyDeleteTotally forget about the ancient incandescent light bulbs... in fact even the CFLs can be now replaced with LEDs (more durable, last many more years, and coming down in prices!) Typical Incandescents consume 60Watts of power... CFLs (75% less) at 13Watts... LEDs even less at around 4-5Watts.
ReplyDeleteWhere is the best place to cheaply purchase good LED lightbulbs?
ReplyDeleteAmazon.com ...realgoods.com ... ledtronics.com ... then Google other LED vendors!
ReplyDeleteI viewed your video, and tried some of the Green ways to reduce power and costs. I now also turn-down my Hot Water Heater (electric) when I am not home, and my electtric bills have been decreasing by about 10%. Next I plan to purchase a drying rack, and then begin to dry my clothes indoors as well (this should save even more because my dryer is electric.) My goal is reduce my power consumption and costs by 35-40% too... Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteI have in the past 6 months switched out my heating/cooling in my home to a geothermal heat pump. We love it! It is saving us a lot of money this summer in energy savings and in the winter we save a lot because we are no longer buying oil to heat our home.
ReplyDeleteHow about $10 monthly electric bills... how? Well again check-out my HowDoUconserve (learn how to economize your conservation @Home) online video at this site, and full video @YouTube...

Today 4/22/2010 in the USA is Earth Day... I decided to ditch my efficient auto (REDUCE MY CARBON FOOTPRINT), and use mass-transit + walking to travel round-trip from SouthNJ into Philadelphia. After work, I also plan to walk across the Ben Franklin Bridge over the Delaware River into SouthNJ... then continue on with a NJ-Transit train. What has everyone done today to conserve resources in the U.S. and Worldwide?
ReplyDeleteI ride my bike 3 miles to school everyday. It saves me a bundle on subway tokens and is much faster surprisingly. If you live in the city and don't own a bicycle, then something is wrong.
ReplyDeleteWe are next looking to REDUCE our paper (replace with 100% recycled paper) and bottled water usage (stop purchasing large-scale office/departmental bottled water... go back using the already supplied water devices at work) at work. This will not be popular initially, but hopefully through hard work and good info... we can change the culture at our work place. The first place to begin is at home... these practices will first be easier at home!
ReplyDeleteI continue to $ave @Home with less electric power & natural gas consumed (see my HowDoUconserve YouTube video), and just replaced my hot H2O heater with a new and more efficient unit. Also lately I am educating myself with Lester R. Brown's "World on the Edge: How to Prevent Environmental and Economic Collapse" (includes latest info on "Plan B 4.0" too)... so much to learn... so much to do!
ReplyDeleteDuring Summer2013 I have almost achieved 60MPG with my 2011 Prius-2 (so far 570mi with only 10 gallons of petrol.) It is all in how one drives their vehicles... I always keep my Prius in "Eco Mode", and while driving I mainly stay within the "Eco range" to really maximize my mileage (also keeps the pollution down too [most important!]) What have others achieved with their hybrid-type autos lately too?
